Tunnel Beach is an amazing beach accessed via a walking track and man-made tunnel. A walk approximately 40-60 minutes takes you along Tunnel Beach Road then down the walking track over farmland down to the beach. Be sure to check the local newspaper (Otago Daily Times) for tide times (low tide is essential to access the beach).
There are a great range of Walking Tracks in Dunedin.
You will need a car. Leave town on Portsmouth drive, sticking to the harbour road all the way to Glenfalloch It is on the right (5-6k) - great for lunch and a look around the garden.
Continue on the harbour road until you reach Pilots beach on the left, almost at the end of the road (about 15-20 k), there are usually seals there and in the evening blue penguins can be seen coming in.
Above you is the Albatross colony. The centre is free to get into and there is a restaurant inside. The tours are not free and it might be worth asking if there is any chance of seeing chicks, or flying birds before you pay for a tour.
Leaving the albatross colony you will see a sign to penguin place, they run tours of the yellow eyed penguin nesting areas and are well worth visiting towards the end of the day when the birds start coming in.
Coming back along that road there is a sign on the left (about 10k) to Larnach Castle. This is a must see if you are interested in quirky Victorian buildings, it is not free nor are the gardens; both are included in the castle ticket.
Come back along the high road and see some remarkable views of Dunedin and the harbour.
If you want to do the whole lot you should visit Larnach castle before the Albatross colony and re-join the harbour Rd.
The Taieri Gorge Railway train departs at 9.30 and 2.30 from the Dunedin railway station (featured in the book 1001 buildings you must see before you die) just down from the Octagon. The railway goes through some spectacular NZ countryside.
Monarch Wildlife Cruises is happy to offer 15% discount to Opthalmology Course attendees who take our 1hr wildlife cruise or T2 half day cruise.
Leave town on Stuart St (the road at the top of the Octagon) fork Rt over the top of the hill and follow that Rd all the way through Outram (about 20k) to Middlemarch (about 50k). This is the start of Central Otago and the start of the rail trail.
There are cafes in Middlemarch and the river Taieri to sit beside if you want to have a picnic.
